LCM Song Of The Day: ‘Coda’ - The Willows

Taken from their wonderful latest album ‘Through the Wild’, Coda is the new single from Cambridge band and LCM favourites The Willows. The video was filmed by Cliff Ward and stars the band, a seagull and a blustery beach at Broadstairs Folk Week.

The Willows are a folk-roots band from Cambridge, UK. The band shot to prominence when their debut album Beneath Our Humble Soil was championed by legendary BBC DJs Mike Harding and Bob Harris, who subsequently invited them in for a BBC Radio 2 live session. Considerable national acclaim followed including 4.5 stars in Maverick and a Spiral Earth Award nomination for Best Debut. Their follow up 'Amidst Fiery Skies' (produced by Sean Lakeman) received a 5-Star review in the Telegraph and a spot in their albums of the year.

With numerous festival appearances from Cambridge to Glastonbury they grew a reputation as one of the UK's most exciting live acts and were nominated for Best Band in the 2014 FATEA awards. Their new line-up is bursting with vocal and instrumental talent from across the UK roots scene. Stylistically the band continue to take in influences from Folk, Americana and rock traditions and meld them through their own engaging songwriting. Although it has to be said this line-up and album has more of the power and edge of their live shows than either predecessor. Lyrical songwriting is once again at the heart of the record... Initially direct and personal, the angst-ridden Americana opener Coda is offset by the beautifully optimistic Better Days. Perfect Crime drives home a tale of identity fraud during the Great War; Pearl Hart of a notorious 19th century highwaywoman; and the heartbreaking ballad Out of Our Hands laments the horrors of the battle of Solferino. Fronted by the distinctively tender vocals of Jade Rhiannon the band adds Katriona Gilmore (Gilmore & Roberts, The Albion Band) on fiddle to their line-up along with Ben Savage (Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage) on guitar/dobro, Evan Carson (Sam Kelly, Seth Lakeman) on drums/bodhran and Cliff Ward on banjo/guitar.

There is a real classic retro vibe to our next LCM featured track written by the wonderful Demi Marriner. Demi was one of the fast rising stars of our last LCM gig at the Half Moon and this wonderful song adds to her already growing catalogue of great songs.

This new video was filmed by Sam East at Studiowz, Pembrokeshire with the audio recorded by Owain Fleetwood Jenkins. Demi is joined on the song by another fast-rising star Robbie Cavanagh plus Scott Warman and Ben Gonzalez.

UK singer-songwriter Demi Marriner landed the Number 1 spot on the iTunes UK Country Albums Chart just 48 hour after the release of debut EP ‘Tracks and Trails’, before going on to reach Number 3 with her debut single on the iTunes Country Singles charts with Learn To Love’ just seven months later followed closely with a Number 2 slot with second EP ‘Dandelion.’ Since, Demi has gone on to record numerous BBC sessions including those with BBC West Midlands, BBC Introducing, BBC Gloucester and a session on Amazing Radio with BBC Radio 2 presenter Baylon Leonard.

Demi has also received television recognition with Sky/Freeview channel ‘Keep It Country’, who continues to play her music videos. Our LCM featured track today is the latest single from one of the fast-rising Country stars of 2019 the wonderful Ashley McByrde. Watch out for new music coming soon.

Ashley has been recently nominated for two awards in the 62nd Annual GRAMMY Awards. She is up for Best Country Solo Performance for "Girl Goin' Nowhere" as well as Best Country Song for "Girl Goin' Nowhere."

“‘Girl Goin’ Nowhere’ is the song that keeps on giving,” Ashley reflects. “I was blown away by our first Grammy nomination for Country Album of the Year last year. We head to Nashville today to meet our next LCM featured artist Erin Enderlin. The beautiful ‘Tonight I Don’t Give A Damn’ is taken from her brand new album Faulkner County. We love the pedal steel on the song which gives a wonderfully heartfelt and melancholy vibe.

The last few years have been especially busy for singer-songwriter Erin Enderlin. While she first turned heads as a godsend to those aching for an artist with some golden-era country backbone, Enderlin’s acclaimed 2017 record ‘Whiskeytown Crier’ cemented her as something even more: a literary songwriter and superb vocal stylist with a knack for sharply drawn––and often sad––characters. Named a member of the 2018 CMT Next Women of Country class and recipient of the Arkansas Country Music Awards Songwriter and Album of the Year trophies, she has surged to the forefront of new artists rooted in the genre’s rich history. We have been a fan of our next LCM featured artist for a while now. Kendell Marvel's reflective track "Let It Go" is taken from the new album ‘Solid Gold Sounds’ released via Easy Eye Sound.

Kendell Marvel wrote and recorded his new album, Solid Gold Sounds, in a matter of days, but it took a lifetime in country music to get there. Marvel and The Black Keys’ Auerbach co-wrote nine of the album’s 10 songs, drawing on the country sounds of the ‘70s as well as Marvel’s own experiences. Their songwriting collaborators include country legend John Anderson on the album’s first track, “Hard Time With the Truth.” A native of Southern Illinois, Marvel moved to Nashville at 28, shifting his goal of being an artist to raising his family while working as a songwriter. Marvel’s writing credits include Gary Allan’s “Right Where I Need to Be” and Chris Stapleton’s Grammy-winning single, “Either Way.” Brothers Osborne, Jamey Johnson, Jake Owen, Blake Shelton, George Strait, and Lee Ann Womack have also cut his songs.

We love Rob’s second single release taken from his forthcoming third studio album ‘In This Town You’re Owned’ set for release on Feb 14th. With Travelling Willbury’s and rockabilly vibes this track is sure to be a live favourite. The excellent video was filmed by the multi-talented Katie Nicholas, who many of you know.

Rob will be on his UK Spring tour in March and early April, with his London date at The Lexington on March 23rd

Of the new track, Rob comments, “There is so much we can all learn from life. ‘Life will take you, if you like it or if you don’t, so live it’. Do we sometimes take our lives for granted? Do we always live life to the full? Should we take in what is going on around us more?”

‘In This Town You’re Owned’ is produced by Ethan Johns and the central theme asks the difficult questions about everyday emotions.

Full of lush, sweeping arrangements and honest, deeply vulnerable self-examination, ‘Desert Dove’ marks a bold new chapter for Michaela Anne, both artistically and professionally. While the songwriting is still very much rooted in the classic country she’s come to be known for, the record (her first for Yep Roc) represents something of a sonic shift, incorporating more modern production elements than ever before in pursuit of a sound that owes as much influence to indie rock as honky-tonk. Despite the bolder, more adventurous arrangements, Michaela’s crystalline voice remains front and center on the album, a pure, airy beam of light shining bravely into the dark corners of loneliness, pain, and desire that we all so often to try to hide.

Produced jointly by Sam Outlaw and Delta Spirit’s Kelly Winrich and recorded with an all-star band that included guitarist Brian Whelan (Dwight Yoakam, Jim Lauderdale), fiddler Kristin Weber (Kacey Musgraves, Margo Price), and drummers Mark Stepro (Ben Kweller, Butch Walker) and Daniel Bailey (Everest, Father John Misty), ‘Desert Dove’ is an achingly beautiful collection, with songs that frequently find themselves balancing optimism and fatalism in the very same breath. There’s an undercurrent of yearning in Michaela’s music (the melancholy “Be Easy,” for instance, chases a peace of mind that never comes, while the breezy “Child Of The Wind” longs for connection and permanence in the face of perpetual itinerancy), as well as a fiercely feminine perspective that’s assured in its power and unapologetic in its candor. The prostitute of the title track challenges the traditional perception of women as a source of comfort and service for men (“You love them all the way they want and they need / But tell me who does your heart wish to please?” she asks) and the spirited “If I Wanted Your Opinion” offers up an all-purpose response to gendered condescension.

Michaela first began garnering national attention with the 2014 release of ‘Ease My Mind,’ an old-school collection hailed by The New York Times for its “plain-spoken songs of romantic regret and small-town longing” and named one of the year’s best country albums by The Village Voice. After a move from Brooklyn to Nashville, Michaela followed it up in 2016 with the similarly lauded ‘Bright Lights and the Fame,’ which featured guest appearances by Rodney Crowell and Punch Brother Noam Pikelny. NPR said Michaela “works through weepers and hits the honky-tonks as every great country singer should,” while Rolling Stone compared her to Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris, and Vice Noisey praised her as the antidote to commercial pop country, calling her “our saving grace, our angel, the person who will help usher us into a new age.” Songs from the record landed on high profile Spotify playlists as well as the HBO series ‘Divorce,’ and the album earned Michaela slots at Bristol Rhythm & Roots, Merlefest, and both the US and UK iterations of AmericanaFest, along with a seemingly endless series of dates across the States and Europe with the likes of Mandolin Orange, Courtney Marie Andrews, Joe Pug, Ron Pope, and Sam Outlaw.

Our LCM featured track today is the brand new single from New Zealand born but London based Penny. It’s taken from Penny’s independently released debut EP, 'Whats going on'. Music & words by Penny Riviera and Dane Hartsell with music production by Simon Ellam. It was filmed on location at The Ned, London by Max Benoist.

Discovered as a teen by the son of the late great American Country Music Producer, Paul Cohen (MCA Nashville); Penny spent formative years in Nashville, London, Sydney, Melbourne and Toronto training under the mentorship of a host of classic rock and country stars. Mid-way through her development she suffered from acute anxiety issues which forced her to come home and seek treatment. At the time she says it felt like the whole world had fallen in around her, but now she uses her experiences (and the tools that she learned to help her deal with these ups and downs) to help others; most recently fronting a concert for mental health organisation Retune.org, advocating the importance of talk therapies for those suffering with anxiety and depression. She was also invited to speak and perform at a concert to promote mental wellbeing and available care with Elton Johns original manager and an official Brit Awards charity partner.

Eager to make up for lost time, Penny Riviera has been on a ride of momentum for the past 18 months! She has released two singles in the past 18 months to acclaim by the UK country and performance scene and has been featured on London Live TV, Chris Country Radio and more. She has been performing across London to crowded venues including the Hard Rock Café, Mahiki, The Bedford and The Islington and was recently invited to open for multi-award winning, triple-platinum selling Irish band KEYWEST when they played in London.

Penny recently performed at The Ned in London and is set to perform at Indieweek music festival in Toronto this November.

Featuring the guest vocals of Carolyn Hunter and a special appearance by Tyrone the Dog, our featured track today is a song of homecoming. Colorado singer-songwriter, Daniel Rod­­riguez, turns to his acoustic guitar for memorable, melodic hooks to accompany his poetic and contemplative folk songs.

Daniel comments “I’ve traveled so many places in this world, from the mundane to the miraculously beautiful, but at all times I have looked forward to returning back home to Colorado. That’s what this song is about, and Jesse Borrell directed and captured this sentiment masterfully on camera for the official video for my song, ‘Colorado.’ We chased the sunlight to get both morning and evening golden hours, and took over a motel on the eastern plains to get these beautiful shots. I released the song recently as a single, though it will be part of a larger collection of songs under the album title ‘Sojourn of a Burning Sun’ coming sometime next year.”

Boulder Weekly refers to Rodriguez’s voice as “a timeless folk voice, deep and hearty, weathered but comforting.” With over a decade under his belt as one of the founding members and lead songwriters of the transcendental folk band, Elephant Revival, Rodriguez is well-versed in the Americana tour circuit. Before going on hiatus, after their third headlining Red Rocks show in May 2018, Elephant Revival had released six albums and performed countless shows and festivals across the nation as well as overseas.

Needing to fill the musical void that might have become following Elephant Revival’s hiatus announcement, Rodriguez immediately headed out on tour as a solo artist. He’s been chosen as main support for bands such as Fruition, Mandolin Orange, Josh Ritter, Birds of Chicago, and John Craigie in addition to being added to numerous festivals like Northwest String Summit, Jam Cruise, and WinterWonderGrass.

Our LCM featured track today is a beautiful new cover version of the Elton John classic ‘Yellow Brick Road’ by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Yola Carter. Yola Carter is an English musician and singer-songwriter from Bristol, England. She became the lead singer of the band Phantom Limb, who released their first album in 2010. She has sung backing vocals for numerous artists including Massive Attack, The Chemical Brothers and Iggy Azalea. Yola received four nominations at the 62nd Grammy Awards, including the all-genre Best New Artist category. la released her first solo EP, Orphan Offering, in 2016. In February 2019, she released her debut album ‘Walk Through Fire’ on Dan Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound label, to much acclaim. The album title references both a fire which damaged Yola's home and an abusive relationship from which she escaped.

LCM Song Of The Day: ‘Give Thanks’ - Daisy Chute

‘Give Thanks’ is an Americana song written and performed by LCM favourite London-based Scottish/American artist Daisy Chute. This wonderfully rich track features Daisy singing and playing banjo and her band consisting of cello, pedal steel, double bass, drums, piano, guitar and plenty of harmonies. It was recorded at Konk Studios owned by her mentor Sir Ray Davies (of The Kinks).

The song is a Thanksgiving anthem - it is a tribute to her American family and is set to be released today on Thanksgiving Day (28th November). It starts with a rich vocal harmony section in free-time, before it kicks into tempo led by the banjo. At a mere 2 and a half minutes, this infectiously joyful song leaves you wanting more.

Morganway - London Life

LCM Song Of The Day: ‘London Life’ - Morganway

‘London Life’ is the new single from one of our favourite live band in 2019 the fantastic Morganway. It’s taken from their excellent self titled debut album, which is sure to be included in a lot of top album end-of-year lists.

Morganway are a six-piece from East Anglia founded by twin brothers Callum (vocals, guitar, bass) and Kieran Morgan (lead guitar, backing vocals). Throughout their early years the boys played in various bands but struggled to find a box to fit into. Too rock for folk, too pop for indie, too indie for country, or so it seemed. Choosing to follow their instincts rather than convention, they became Morganway and suddenly people started listening.

Joined by SJ Mortimer (vocals), Nicole Terry (fiddle), Matt Brocklehurst (keys) and Ed Bullinger (drums), the band has developed a sound built on a love for multi-layered vocal harmonies, driven guitar riffs and distinctive fiddle flourishes, bound by raw, honest songwriting. They've built this into a live show that in one moment is classic rock and the next mystical folk, catching the attention of Whispering Bob Harris and many others in the rising British Americana scene. Their collective obsession with ‘70s West Coast rock is also met with a love of Brit Rock, folk and modern Americana.

London based singer-songwriter Amy Wawn is originally from Bulawayo in Zimbabwe. Amy’s style ranges from lively foot-stomping folk rhythms to the dirty-delicious sounds of delta blues on the slide guitar, accompanied by a dark, brooding vocal range, lilting melodies and thoughtful lyrics. Our featured track today is a wonderful live version of ‘Trouble’ taken from a ‘Go Out Of Tune’ session filmed in August, Amy has also recently joined on the Talentbanq roster

The ‘Calamities’ was coined after Amy’s first open mic night in Cape Town, South Africa in 2014. It's about the unplanned mistakes that make art unexpectedly great, life's breath-taking synchronicities.

In 2018 Amy was invited to play on The Den Stage at The Cambridge Folk Festival which headlined artists Patti Smith and First Aid Kit that year. She released her debut EP The Suspects in February 2018 in collaboration with exquisitely talented violinist Georgina Leach, who is now a full time member of the band. Georgina was recently nominated as ‘Instrumentalist Of The Year 2018’ by the Americana Music Association. She is an accomplished artist in her own right and has performed with Seasick Steve and Ethan Johns and the Black Eyed Dogs, to mention only two.

‘The Suspects’ EP has been met with some great reviews. Indie Band Guru recently described it as an EP that, "perfectly showcases a musician who has a lot to offer. With an impressive range of sound, a lyrical depth and sublime vocals, all the right boxes are ticked."

Amy is now based in Camden Town where she performs regularly at Spiritual Bar, one of London’s more intimate and eclectic live music venues. She was invited in 2017 to be an artist on the Spiritual Records label.

We are massive fans of Australian band The Teskey Brothers here at LCM HQ. This new live version of ‘Paint My Heart’ taken from their new ‘Run Home Slow’ is goose-bump inducing. Taken from her forthcoming concept album, ‘Angel With Tattoos’ is the wonderful title track from Wisconsin born Skyler Grey.

Skylar Grey is a five-time GRAMMY-nominated singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who is responsible for co-writing some of the most memorable songs of the past couple years. Ironically, while spending time away from the music industry and living in a cabin in the woods, she penned Eminem’s/Rihanna’s “Love The Way You Lie,” which became one of the biggest songs of their careers. This lead to Grey writing Dr. Dre’s “I Need A Doctor,” which she performed alongside Dre and Eminem at the 53rd GRAMMY Awards ceremony, Diddy Dirty Money’s “Coming Home,” Lupe Fiasco’s “Words I Never Said,” T.I.’s “Castle Walls” and most recently, Kaskade’s “Room For Happiness” (she wrote and sang on two versions of the song, which became the album's third single). Her work has lit up the Billboard Hot 100 and iTunes sales charts, totaling more than 15 million singles sold globally.

Skylar was born and raised in a tiny village in Wisconsin, and she has been performing since the age of 6. She left home as a teenager to pursue a career in music. Aside from having one of the most heart-rending voices in music, she plays nearly a dozen instruments including piano and guitar, and is also an engineer and producer.

Earlier in 2012, she released “The Buried Sessions of Skylar Grey,” an EP that includes her performing stripped-down versions of some of her smash hits. Currently, she is preparing to release her debut full-length solo album DON'T LOOK DOWN, which was released on July 9, 2013, and features several guest appearances. With her ability to cross multiple genres seamlessly, we never know what to expect from this versatile songstress.

Dope Lemon - Hey You

LCM Song Of The Day: ‘Hey You’ - Dope Lemon

We head to the southern hemisphere to meet the Australian band Dope Lemon. You might recognize the lead singer, Angus Stone, of sibling indie-pop duo Angus and Julia Stone. Dope Lemon features a more electric, '90s slacker rock sound than on his regular projects, With its hypnotic bassline and rich groove we love this track from a recent live Mahogany session. The song is taken from their new album ‘Smooth Big Cat’ released on September 27th.

Dope Lemon's first album grew out of Angus writing at home on his farm and jamming with friends in his recording studio on the property. Prior collaborators Rohin Brown (the Walking Who) and Elliott Hammond (the Delta Riggs) are among those to appear on the finished debut, ‘Honey Bones’, which arrived on Universal in the spring of 2016. This was followed by the EP ‘Hounds Tooth’ in early 2017, before Angus returned to working with his sister to record their fourth collaborative LP, Snow. The Dope Lemon project was revived in early 2019 with the single "Hey You," accompanied by the announcement of its second studio album, ‘Smooth Big Cat’, and an accompanying tour. With a more conceptual focus, the album focused around the Smooth Big Cat persona, described by Stone himself as "a mystical creature of leisure."
